At the University of Novo mesto we embrace internationality and warmly welcome exchange students for a semester or an entire academic year. All of our faculties offer a number of different courses, listed below. We dedicate ourselves to each student individually, which guarantees that you can get full advantage of the time you spend with us.

Students must apply and be selected at the home institution.
After selection, the application process at the University of Novo mesto begins:
1. Your home university should nominate you to the international office of the University of Novo mesto by sending an email to: international.office@uni-nm.si with student's name, gender, area of study, mobility period (autumn or spring semester or both) and students' e- mail contact, otherwise your application won't be accepted.
2. After your home university has nominated you to study at the University of Novo mesto as an exchange student, you should fill in an Application form. There is no need to send a paper copy of the application.
Your application is complete and will be processed only if you have entered all the required information. All documents needs to be sent in PDF format to international.office@uni-nm.si.
3. After you have completed your application and your host department has approved your application, we will send you an Acceptance letter and Information on living and studying in Novo mesto.
4. After acceptance you will have to send the next necessary documents:
Before mobility, a Learning Agreement must be confirmed and signed by the home institution, host institution and student.

Students need to obtain an appropriate Visa or Permission for Residence before arriving to Slovenia.
Applicants should submit the application personally at the diplomatic mission or consular post.
Visa application forms are available at diplomatic missions and consular posts of the Republic of Slovenia where you can submit visa applications.
FIRST RESIDENCE PERMIT (EU cizizens)
Since 1 May 2004, any citizen from a European Union state can enter the Republic of Slovenia with a valid identity card or a valid passport, without a special entrance permit (i.e. a visa or a residence permit). This holds true no matter the purpose of entry and length of stay in the Republic of Slovenia. For the first three months of stay in the Republic of Slovenia, such persons do not need a residence permit; however, he/she is obliged to register the temporary address with the Police or relevant administrative unit (for Novo mesto: Defranceshijeva ulica 1, 8000 Novo mesto).
In the event that the residence will exceed three months, a residence permit is obligatory. This can be obtained from the administrative office within the residential district (for Novo mesto: Defranceshijeva ulica 1, 8000 Novo mesto). The residence permit will be issued in accordance with the conditions set by the European Union. In order to issue a residence permit to a citizen from a Member State for the purpose of study the following must be provided by the student:
According to the stated directive, the residence permit is granted for the period of studies or at the most for one year and can be extended in the event that the studies last more than one year.
FIRST RESIDENCE PERMIT (Non-EU citizens)
If you are a third-country national from a country whose citizens are required to obtain a visa to enter the Republic of Slovenia and you wish to enter the Republic of Slovenia or stay there for study purposes, you are required to obtain a visa C (tourist visa) or visa D (long term visa) at a diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Slovenia abroad prior to entering the Republic of Slovenia.
For the same purposes, you can enter the Republic of Slovenia and stay there for a certain period of time (for no more than three months (90 days) in a six-month period, starting on the date of the first entry) on the basis of your passport alone if you are a citizen of a country whose citizens are not required to obtain a visa to enter the Republic of Slovenia. In order to be present in the Republic of Slovenia in excess of the allowed 90-days or Visa D, within the 90-day period or after the expiration of Visa D, you are obliged to apply for a first residence permit at the relevant administrative unit in Slovenia (in Novo mesto: Defranceshijeva ulica 1, 8000 Novo mesto).
If you have a valid residence permit issued by another state that is party to the Schengen Agreement, you may enter the Republic of Slovenia on the basis of this permit and a valid travel document and stay there for no longer than three months in a six-month period, which includes the combined duration of your stay in all Schengen States except for the state which issued the visa, starting on the date of the first entry into one of Schengen States or until the expiry of the visa's validity if this is shorter. Within the 90 days period, you are obliged to apply for a first residence permit at the relevant administrative unit in Slovenia (in Novo mesto: Defranceshijeva ulica 1, 8000 Novo mesto).

Once in Slovenia, holders of a visa D do not need to apply for residence permit for the period of validity of the visa D, but they need to report a temporary address within a week (if staying in private accommodation) to the relevant administrative unit in Slovenia (in Novo mesto: Defranceshijeva ulica 1, 8000 Novo mesto).

Students from the EU countries need a Health Insurance Card and two photocopies of it. Students from countries outside the EU must bring a document confirming that they have insurance in their home country, along with their passports.
Students from other countries can either arrange their insurance in Slovenia, which costs approximately 110 EUR (per month) or pay for necessary medical treatment. However, we strongly advise obtaining insurance with insurance company in your home country, which offers arrangements for time spent abroad. Later you may ask for reimbursement of medical expenses in your home country – please check the details at your insurance company.

Slovenia is the only country in Europe with coupons system. This means that you can eat a nice student meal in certain restaurants in Novo mesto or everywhere in Slovenia for 2,5 EUR on average. The rest of the meal is subsidized by Slovenian Government. Recently the system was digitalized and you have two options for that: you can use your mobile phone with Slovenian number (you'll be able to get SIM card from mobile operator shops) or you order a special card which costs 15 EUR and you receive it within 5 working days.

At the registration you'll receive an activation number to active your account on http://www.studentska-prehrana.si/en. You can check how many coupons you have, where you have already eaten, etc. While in restaurant, call 1808 (it is a free number, so it works also if you don't have any credit on your mobile phone) and show your ID. If you order some drink or a meal that exceeds the price of the subsidized meal, you need to pay the price difference. You can eat 2 meals per day with 4 hours interval between meals.

Among Dolenjska hills, less than an hour's drive by motorway from Ljubljana and Zagreb, less than two hours from the sea and the Alps, surrounded by the Krka River lies city Novo mesto. There are approximately 37,300 people living in the municipality, with over 23,000 living in the town of Novo mesto that is the seat of the municipality.
